Sumba is one of the poorer islands of Indonesia.
The Sumbanese people have a mixture of Austronesian and Melanesian ancestry. They claim to be Protestant but still pay homage to their indigenous marapu with bloody sacrificial rites.
The tombs are usually placed in the center of the village in front of the dwellings to remind that death is the most important life event. Funerals last entire weeks and the poor are not always able to offer a worthy burial for their loved ones.
